Woodward is a city in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 24,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pottawatomie County and part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Woodward was founded in 1876 by brothers John and James Woodward, who named it for Wofford, England, where they were born. The city began to grow rapidly in the late 19th century as a result of its location on the banks of the Arkansas River and its access to railroad transportation and natural resources. In 1907, Woodward became one of only two cities in Oklahoma to be designated an open-air shopping center by then-Governor George Catlett Smith due to its large population concentration around downtown. By 1930, it had become one of America's largest cities with over 1 million residents. However, during World War II Woodward experienced a period of economic decline as remainder production from local mines declined amid increased bombing raids from Japan. At that point, federal investment in post-World War II retrenchment led to joblessness among many working class citizens and a rapid revitalization process which saw new construction projects undertaken including major highways such as I-40 and US 12; downtown business expansions; numerous cultural attractions; and growth in nightlife activities such as live music performances at venues like The Diamond Ballroom and Joe's Barbecue & Ribs." The current boomtown form which has been adopted since 2000 has seen businesses expand outside core areas such as Downtown or neigborhoods adjacent thereto while also densifying along Interstate 40 corridor (the "Hollywood Freeway"). Area residences have been erected along multiple streetcar lines (and now bike lanes) running through neighborhoods providing easy access into town center restaurants/bars/nightlife options without having to leave residential areas other than groceries stores near school buses stops etc., making this an increasingly walkable community with transit oriented development unique within American cities today
