In 1915, Woodward became one of five towns in Haskell County to be granted self-government under the Oklahoma Constitution. The town's name honors General Andrew Jackson who was president of the United States during the Creek Wars and also helped negotiate treaties with Mexico and Spain. Woodward has had its share of growth and decline over its history, including periods when it was one of largest cities in eastern OKLAHOMA and had a population well over 2,000; then it decreased rapidly to around 100 residents by 1970 due to drought that destroyed much of downtown Wichita Falls; but since then it has slowly regained some lost ground as other nearby communities grew larger and more developed while Greenwood closed down its business district to concentrate on retail instead of being open for business on Sundays (although still having an active Main Street). In recent years, there have been efforts made by local businesses to attract high-end retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue or Macy's so that they can reopen their districts during off seasons; this has led to a resurgence in growth for Woodward overall although some smaller businesses continue to drop out due to competition from larger stores. There are also three football teams affiliated with National Football League - Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens & Tennessee Titans - all housed within city limits though basketball games take place outdoors at Municipal Stadium adjacent to I-40/US 61 interchange while soccer games take place at Greenwood Community College adjacent to I-40 ramp exit 190B just north of downtown

The original store and mill were destroyed by fire in 1907. Another store and mill were built near present-day Guthrie in 1912 and 1913 respectively.
