Woodward is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa–Munroe City Metropolitan Area. In 1907, J. P. Woodward and his brother-in-law Wm. Burch founded Woodward Oil and Refining Company to process oil from wells in the area now known as Muskogee County. In 1916, Wm. Burch died and J.P.'s son took over the company name for his father's death bed wish: "Woodward will be remembered first by what he did for others than himself". Woodward became a major player in Tulsa's oil industry with its production of gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene and other products until it merged with United States Petroleum Corporation in 1970 to become ChevronTexaco (). The Woodward Dam was built on the Arkansas River near present day Woodward to provide power for heavy industries such as metalworking and agriculture during World War II; however it failed due to corrosion within two years of its construction (1946). A new dam was constructed on the same site in 1951 which remains in use today as part of Oklahoma State Highway 985 (USH 985). The town was named after General James Kenedy Woodbury who fought during World War I with distinction under General John Pershing’s command; Woodbury had been born in Muskogee County three years earlier (1896). The general purchased 640 acres east of town from Jesse James Sr., one of the leading cattle rustlers of his time,.Accordingly, many people thought that when Kenedy called Arbuckle “Oklahoma City” because all Trails media outlets were headquartered there then it would also mean that Arbuckle would receive a similar amount of attention from Oklahomans because they felt he deserved special treatment given his status as an OKC resident

Woodward was established in 1907 as a cattle ranch and oil wellhead. The town became an important center for the oil industry because of its location at the intersection of two major routes, the Butterfield Trail and the Oklahoma Highway Authority's main pipeline. The area now known as Woodward was first settled by Plains Indians and Mexicans in the early 1800s. The first store opened in 1907 and the town became an important stop on both routes. By 1919, Woodward had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1951, Woodward attracted attention when it was chosen to become one of three cities in Oklahoma which would be served by the new Interstate 30. The city grew rapidly during this time and by 1960 had a population of over 5,000 people. In 1969, Woodward merged with neighboring Lorman to form the current city of Lorman-Woodward
