In 1868, The Cherokee Nation gave land to the town of Woodward for $1,000. The first store opened in Woodward in 1870 and was within the limits of present-day downtown. By 1900, Woodward had a population of over 1,200 and two stores. In 1916, The Armour Company moved from their original location on Main Street to what is now Third Street. There they manufactured rifles and shotguns under the name “The Armoury Company” until 1949 when they merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation to become Winchester Repeating Arms Incorporated (WRA). From 1951-1957, WRA manufactured rifle rounds under the name “Military Ballistics Division” products until purchases by Remington Rand resulted in their production being shifted to Winchester factory memory lane beginning with rifle rounds produced as early as 1903 known as “Centennial Rifle Rounds”. In 1957-1959 Winchester introduced a new round designed specifically for deer hunting called the #5 buck Hornet round which quickly became well loved by hunters around the country because it was so accurate and efficient at penetrating large game animals such as deer. This round continued to be used through 1966 when it was replaced by Weatherby Vanguard Vintages calibers for hunting big game animals like bear and elk although some hunter folklore still maintains that Hornet rounds are still occasionally used during duck season against mallards due to their accuracy when shooting out of cover

Woodward was founded in 1907 by my great-grandfather, James W. Woodward, who platted the town on land that he had purchased from the Kiowa and Apache people. The name of the town comes from a Metropole Railroad track that ran through it at one time. The first post office in Woodward was established in 1908. The first store opened in 1909. In 1912, Woodward became a city and was reincorporated as such in 1914. The population of Woodward reached its peak around 1920 with over 120 residents. However, during World War II, Woodward’s population dwindled to just 10 residents due to war-related shortages of food and housing. In 1951, Woodward consolidated with nearby Claremore to form the Oklahoma City metropolitan area and has since grown into one of the most populous cities in America with over 1 million residents. Today, Woodward is known for its cultural attractions including Oktoberfest (the biggest German beer festival in the United States), downtown art galleries, and popular nightlife venues like entertainment district bars and restaurants called “the Strip” or “the Alley” located near Interstate 44/Oklahoma State University campus
