In 2002, the current building for the high school was dedicated and it has since been serving as the home of the Weatherfords High School wrestling program since that year. The economy of Weatherford is primarily agriculture with some light manufacturing operations such as cheese production and tire manufacture contributed to its diversity over time including brick making which stopped being a significant economic force around 1960 due to decreased demand for bricks from other towns within Noble County because oil production increased outside of those towns limits Weatherford is located about 34 miles east of Tulsa on Route 66 between Jenks and Shawnee City on what is now called Pryor Road. It experienced severe weather during tornado outbreak #2 on May 25th EF5 winds at 207 mph which destroyed more than 50 homes southeast of downtown Waterville before dissipating near mile marker 15 on Interstate 40 just south of Jenks Afterward local residents began rebuilding their homes using materials salvaged from demolished structures
In 1907, Weatherford was founded by John W. Ford and his son-in-law, George A. Hays. The town's first post office opened in 1909. In 1912, the Oklahoma National Guard Armory was built in Weatherford and became a mainstay of the local economy. In 1915, the state legislature designated Weatherford as the capital of Oklahoma Territory. The first female OKC teacher, Miss Lillian Bennion, taught at Wellesley Elementary School in 1920. On November 1, 1922, Oklahoma became an independent nation after becoming a republic following the Mexican Revolution; however, Weatherford remained its capital until 1959 when it was moved to Muskogee due to budget limitations. In 1933-1934, during the Great Depression, tornado activity increased in central and eastern OKC; however most tornadoes dissipated before reaching Weatherford because of heavy rains that followed days later. However one severe tornado struck downtownWeatherford on May 10th 1934 which destroyed many homes and killed four people including two women who were pregnant at the time On November 15th 1937 a severe thunderstorm system touched down near Woodward City Limits briefly causing power outages throughout central Oklahoma; however this storm did not develop into a tornado or any other major weather event
