Weatherford is a city in Oklahoma, located on the south bank of the Arkansas River. The population was 16,822 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by J. D. Weatherford and became an American town after it was ceded to Oklahoma by Texas in 1907. In 1936, the city annexed the adjacent towns of White Sands and New Bethlehem. The first post office in Weatherford opened on October 14, 1881, with seven residents named Watherford. The name changed to Weatherford on November 5 that year due to confusion over two different towns called Weatherford in Texas and Oklahoma Territory respectively. On December 4, 1881, a store was built and named Merchants Exchange which served as the first commercial building in town. A school was built soon afterwards and dedicated on February 12th of 1882 under the direction of Mrs Geo Fenton Hays. In 1907,Oklahoma became a state; this led to Mexico moving its capital from Puebla to Mexico City leaving many people displaced including J D Weatherford who relocated his business to McAlester where he started another store called The General Store until his death in 1915 aged 76 years old (now part of Apache Junction). WithOklahoma becoming an American state again following World War II most businesses were abandoned but Mr John Geer reopened Merchants Exchange as a community center which still serves as a popular shopping destination today (email weatherfordsales@gmail.com for more information). The post office closed January 1st 1960 due to low mail volume so all mail now goes through APO/FPO addresses! On July 20th 1951 localist George Nichols contacted Ulysses S Grant about forming an independent candidate for sheriff against incumbent Harry Combs because Nichols felt Combs would not clean up county jails or campaign effectively given his past record as mayor of Tulsa (which had been libeled during Truman’s presidential campaign). On September 25th 1951 Grant gave his acceptance speech accepting nomination for sheriff at Thunder Creek Casino before 2200 citizens attended including some members of Congress who urged him not run since they felt he would have no chance against Combs if he ran himself but Grant decided against it feeling that running would be too much work just months before election day so he did nothing!
