The first gun ever made in Weatherford, Oklahoma was a 12-gauge shotgun. The shotgun was invented by John Witherspoon and named the Witherspoon. It was manufactured in 1898 by Witherspoon & Sons Gun Company. In 1903, the US government passed the National Firearms Act which made it illegal to own any firearms without a license. The Weatherford Massacre took place on April 15, 1922, when a group of gunmen and outlaws killed six people in the town of Weatherford, Oklahoma. The victim's families sued the killers, and after many years of litigation, the defendants were convicted in 1954. The case was retried in 1978 but again resulted in a hung jury. In 1984, the defendants were finally acquitted after three trials.
Weatherford, Oklahoma is a small town in the Kiowa and Comanche county areas of west-central Oklahoma. The population was 7,693 at the 2010 census. The town is located on the Arkansas River, about north of Tulsa, and east of McAlester. Weatherford is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Weatherford were French traders who explored the area in 1819-20. For years there was no permanent human settlement in this area until John Wesley Powell arrived in 1907 and began exploring the Arkansas River valley for irrigation water supplies. In 1911 he mapped out an alluvial valley that would become Weatherford when he named it after his friend Arthur Weathersfield. A post office called Weatherford was established in 1907, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1960. The first store opened at what is now Main Street and Second Avenue in 1909. By 1912 there were six businesses operating within the community: two general stores, one hotel/motel, one bakery/cafeteria, one hardware store/lumberyard, and one gasoline station/auto garage. By 1920 there were nineteen businesses with a total payroll of $27,530; eleven of these were operated by local citizens or their families; four were run by professional entrepreneurs such as bankers David Wohlgemuth (whose family ran a meatpacking plant), J P Dixon (founder of Dixon Farms ice cream company), or H L Smith (president of US Airways). In 1919–1920 John Wesley Powell carried out survey work for Pan American Airways which resulted in naming this stretch along both banks of the Arkansas River "Weatherford Airfields". This name stuck because World War II saw increasing military activity here which caused many structures to be destroyed or replaced including much older airfields like Dowling Field near McAlester which had been used by Army Aviation troops during World War I before becoming an airbase for bomber planes during World War II during which it also served as home to RAF Bomber Command’s operations from 1942-1945

In 1920, oil production began inOklahoma City and quickly became an important factor in the town's growth. In 1923, the first commercial building was built in Weatherford and it soon became an important center for commerce in the area. The town experienced some significant economic changes during World War II; during this time, many businesses closed or were moved out of town because of wartime obligations. However, after the war ended, business picked up again and by 1950 weatherford had reached its peak population size with over 1,000 residents. However, despite these successes over the years, climate change began to play a more prominent role in community life beginning in the 1990s; as global temperatures increased throughout much of North America*, it became increasingly difficult for farmers to grow crops*.
