Weatherford is a city in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 11,672 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County. Weatherford was named for Elisha Weatherford, an American settler and cattle baron who founded the town in 1881. The first post office in Weatherford opened on April 14, 1875. The present downtown area of Weatherford was built around this same time. Weatherford is a small town located in the southern part of Oklahoma. The population of Weatherford was 8,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Stephens County. The town was founded in 1881 by settlers from Texas and named for General Winfield Scott, who had led American forces against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1906, Weatherford became a stop on the Central Oklahoma Mail Line and remained that way until 1968. The first permanent settler in Weatherford was Isaac Watts, who arrived in 1881. He built a cabin near what is now the courthouse square. In 1886, local farmers met to discuss creating a village within their respective communities and decided to name it Weatherford after General Winfield Scott, who had fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. That same year, Representative John Wetherbee of Tulsa presented House Bill No. 7 to create Weatherford as its own municipality with its own elected officials ( mayor and council ). On July 1, 1886, when legislation authorizing incorporation passed both houses of the state legislature without opposition from Tulsa City Councilor John Boddington (D), Weatherford's mayor and council were sworn in and began operating as an independently incorporated municipality under their new name. In 1907, due to increased travel requirements associated with World War I (the Great War), general mail service between Tulsa and Wichita was suspended; accordingly, many residents relied on horseback riding or walking to reach their workplaces outside of town limits each day during those years. As a result of this lack of transportation options within town limits, businesses closed up shop or went out of business because they could not reach their customers by foot or horseback ride alonenae! Townspeople responded by erecting high walls around all but one block of downtown streets so that only pedestrians could access those areas without having to walk through brush or crossing streamsbeds; this "gated community" remains today as one notable remnant of early 20th century weatherfordsian life! In 1928–29 Hurricane Donnie caused extensive damage across much of central Oklahoma including parts of Dooly County including Weatherford; as a result windthrowers were used extensively throughout most parts of town with some homes destroyed outright while others sustained significant damage (e.g., rooflines were knocked off churches).
