The Weatherford Gun Club was formed in 1909. The club held its first meeting at the home of Judge John W. Browning. In 1916, the club moved to a rented building on East Broadway near 9th Street. The club had five members and was organized into a shoot-out competition team. In 1919, the Weatherford Gun Club changed its name to the Weatherford Rifle and Pistol Club. In 1923, the club moved to new quarters on South Park Avenue in Weatherford. The club had ten members and was organized into a shoot-out competition team along with other rifle and pistol clubs in nearby towns such as Muskogee and Claremore
Weatherford is a small town in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,236 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Weatherford was founded in 1881 by settlers from Workington, Maine. The community became a stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1800s. In 1890, Weatherford was designated as the first county seat of Owasso County and it remained that way until 1907 when Haskell City replaced it. In 1911, the towns of Weatherford and Siloam Springs were combined to form a new municipality which would become known as Weatherford-Siloam Springs. The name change may have been due to an early oil discovery in Siloam Springs which bore the same name but had no connection with either town. In 1960, following annexation by Tulsa , Weatherford became part of Tulsa-Weatherford Micropolitan Statistical Area . As with most areas annexed by Tulsa during this time period, many businesses folded or moved away because of high cost of living and little job market potential within their new boundaries

The first settler in what would become Weatherford was James Watkins who arrived about 1871 during the Mexican American War on horseback from Texas.. He built a log cabin near present day Hearst Dam which later became known as Watkins’ Cabin.. After staying until 1872 he left for unknown reasons but his son James Fenton Watkins returned to live at least four years before moving away again.. It wasn’t until 1881 that another settler named George Stephens arrived who built a cabin on what is now your street corner opposite Watkins’ Cabin .. Stephens remained until 1885 when he moved out west to join his brother James Fenton Watkins at Pawnee (now Independence)Oklahoma.. From 1881-1887 three more men called themselves “Johns” – John Stevenson (1881), Edwin Stephenson (1884), Horace Thompson (1901). These men were actually all related; their father had married their mothers sister! One possible reason why these surnames didn’t catch on is because many early settlers were often farmers or mechanics rather than ranchers/farmers? Over time different families felt they needed separate surnames so they changed them back to their original ones once they got settled into their new places! However some continue to keep those surnames even after they move away from home…like Vernon Witherspoon currently doing so in nearby Stillwater! 1) On January 1st 1907, J.W. Weatherford opened the first store in what would becomeWeatherford Oklahoma 2) On February 12th 1907 Mr G H Atkinson opened the second store inside ofthe newly constructed Post Office 3) By 1909 both Store #1 & 2 were closed due to very low demand for goods brought intotown by travelers 4) On October 15th 1910 Indianola Rodeo took place just north of town 5) That same year W L Hays establishedthe first bank in town 6) In 1913 oil began flowing from shale fields located east oftown 7) In 1916 Oklahoma statehood was granted toOklahoma 8 ) By 1922 over 50 businesses were operating within Town Limits 9) On January 17th 1925 Pryor Sells his last cow pie before moving out West 10) The old post office burned down on May 15th 1926 11) During World War II much production occurred withintown duetoSugar production
Weatherford was founded in 1879 by cowboy prospectors J.B. Weatherford and H.C. McCulloch, who named the town after their nearby cattle range. The first post office opened in 1880, and the town had a population of just 10 people by 1890. By 1915, Weatherford had grown to a population of over 200 and became one of the leading cotton towns in Oklahoma. A major local industry until the late 20th century was farming cotton, which continues to be an important part of the town's economy today.
