In 1984, when oil began flowing through Oklahoma City (and later Wichita Falls), Waterford became one of several communities along Interstate 40 within 100 miles (160 km) of either city who were ordered by state regulators not to open their doors due to concerns about air quality from oil spills and emissions from factories adjacent to their homes. Despite these environmental dangers posed by neighboring industries, many residents chose instead to stay put and enjoy their beautiful countryside while oil exports continued downriver
