Weatherford is a town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 3,045 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Haskell County. The name "Weatherford" comes from the Cherokee word for "Creek." The first permanent settler in Weatherford was John Pritchard in 1881. Other early settlers were George Fenton and his family in 1887, and J.B. Hornbuckle and his party in 1899. In 1903, the town was named after Edwin Hinton Weatherford, an American senator from Texas who served from 1907 to 1913 and again from 1929 to 1933. In 1907, a hydroelectric plant was built on the Arkansas River by individuals associated with Wichita Electric Power Company (later renamed Omaha Electric Power Company). This new industry attracted many people to Weatherford because it provided employment and income opportunities outside of farming or ranching activities. The city started construction on what would become its first courthouse and jail in 1915; it opened its doors to the public on December 1st of that year. In 1925, when oil began flowing through nearby Wichita Falls into the Iraqi fields near Waco (now upstream of Houston), local interests formed a consortium known as Wichita Oil Fields Corporation to drill for oil within existing oilfields adjacent to Wichita Falls without going through official channels like those established for crude-oil production with Oklahoma Gas & ElecCompany (OG&E).
