The first tornado touched down in Weatherford on November 1, 1886, killing one person and injuring twenty-three people. The name Weatherford comes from the nearby Wichita Mountains where the first white settlers found cottonwood trees to grow. After a few years of development, the town reached its present size when it was annexed by Tulsa in 1912. There have been many notable people associated with Weatherford over the years. In 1907, J.D. Dunn became the first mayor of Weatherford after he was elected to office on an anti-corruption platform. He served two terms before leaving to become Mayor of Tulsa in 1912. Other notable figures include Drs. Wm Henson and James Ewing who both served as medical doctors in Tulsa during World War I and II respectively; Methodist minister Jesse Jackson who attended Baylor University; actor Burt Reynolds; and business magnate Phil Knight who co-founded Nike with his father opening the company’s first store in 1967 in downtown Tulsa
