European exploration began with Spanish explorers in 1821 when they reached what is now western Kansas City via a route following Medicine Creek near modern day Wichita Falls. A treaty negotiated between Spain and Great Britain established boundary lines between those two nations around present-day Tulsa on August 28, 1827. In 1836,Oklahoma became a U.S.-Mexico land grant to Richard Meneley (1801-1886), an American businessman who had traveled through Mexico City on his way westward as part of his exploratory journey.[1] On January 6, 1907,[2]Oklahoma became a state when it was admitted into Congress as The United States of America.[3][4][5] Tulsa's nickname "The Texas of OKLAHOMA" came about because settlers from Houston were attracted to its large cotton fields—the most important crop grown in that state at that time—and its cheap labor force (compared to other states).[6][7] When oil exploration began unlocking reserves under nearby Comanche National Grasslands in 1911,[8] businesses throughout Tulsa started investing money in wells;[9][10] henceforth "thesoilers" or Oil Capitalists would be one term used for early Tulsans concerned with developing oil resources within their city limits[11][12]: these men founded companies such as International Harvester Company (IHC), Gulf Oil Refining Company (Gulfocoal) and Standard Oil Company (Standard). This ended dayslong looting by mobs outside Mexican restaurants frequented by Anglo citizens where food was being served while shops remained open:[14],[15]' ' T he rioting subsided soon afterward but continued among Mexicans living on ranch lands adjoining Anglo towns until 1943 when federal troops arrived en masse resultant peace talks led by General George Custer saved those communities from destruction
