Tulsa, Oklahoma is a city located in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 1,515 at the 2010 census. The city is located in the Tulsa metropolitan area and is part of the Tulsa-Mulberry-Fayette statistical area. The first people to set foot on what is now Tulsa were Native Americans who roamed the area around present-day downtown in search of food and water. In 1818, traders from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania founded a trading post and store in what is today downtown Tulsa. This led to the town's growth as a business center for central Oklahoma Territory. In 1907, a group of businessmen led by John Swope built Hotel Wichita on Lower Grand Boulevard across fromthe Tulsa Police Department on what is now Fourth Street NW. It soon became one of the most popular hotels in town with its own gymnasium and pool complex as well as rooming rooms for tourists. The hotel was sold to developer Charles Bowers in 1912 and renamed Bowers Place after him. Bowers Place continued to be popular until it caught fire during an arson attack on October 10, 1928 which destroyed most of the building including its ballroom and dance floor. It reopened following extensive repairs but quickly lost popularity again due to new development in downtown Tulsa that replaced it. From 1930 until 1949, Barnett Air Force Base operated out of Terminal 3 (now Gate 5) at Northwest First Avenue and Sheridan Road NW; this allowed local residents access to military bases near their homes without having to go far outside their neighborhoods. As part of Operation Corlett II (1949–1950), General James Echols moved his command headquarters from Fort Worth, Texas into Enterprise National Laboratory at Northwest First Avenue and Sheridan Road NW – giving Tulsa residents easy access to national research laboratories without having to leave their homes or travel far outside their cities limits! During World War II, Japanese civilians were rounded up by US forces near downtown Tulsa and placed into underground detention camps known as Canute’s Falls concentration camp which stretched along Northeast Third Street between Elmhurst Drive NE and East 24th Place NE; these camps are still recognized by historians as some of the worst human rights violations during World War II! After liberation operations ended in 1945, many Japanese displaced persons returned home while others chose not repatriation or settled elsewhere withinOKlahoma Territory; this left downtown Tuls
