The first permanent settler in what is now Tulsa was John Wilkinson in 1824. He organized a company to purchase land from the Wichita Nation for $5 per acre ($100 today). In 1836, James Kelley purchased 2,500 acres (1 km²) of land northwest of downtown Tulsa from Andrew Jackson for $25 per acre ($250 today). The town site that would become Oklahoma City was surveyed by Major George Rogers Clark and named after him in 1839. In 1861, when Confederate General Edward Pemberton surrendered at Union General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg Virginia, most people within Kansas Territory were total Integration into the United States due to pro-Union sentiment among some Republicans during that time period. However many Tulsans had sided with Confederate forces because they felt their state wasn't being treated fairly under Union rule as much as other areas within Kansas Territory. Some Tulsans decided to stay behind and fight against Union troops while others crossed into Texas to join up with the Confederacy. When military forces loyal to Lincoln arrived in Tulsa on April 14th 1865, many Tulsans chose to evacuate before it became too late due to fears of possible execution or capture if they remained behind.[1][2]
