The originalowntown business district contained over 100 businesses including banks and hotels dating back to 1907/08 when downtown OKC was still under construction In 1914, Oklahoma City became the state capital afterOklahoma Statehood; however, that city's location within Indian Territory prevents it from being listed as among the Top 10 U S Cities for Growth from 2000-2010 according to Forbes Magazine During World War II (1941-1945), Tulsans served in various military forces such as Infantry divisions (Eighth Army), Tank Battalions (Third Infantry Division), Air Force Service Units (4th Bombardment Group) After World War II ended there were increased calls for more housing developments throughout central Oklahoma but no answer came until annexation of most or all of Aurora Township by Tulsa in late 1951 This gave Tulsans access to good schools closer to their homes while Aurora lost its farming center status which had prevented annexation
