On January 6, 1907, Tulsa City Council agreed to annex the eastern side of Tulsa County. This annexation created the city of Tulsa and began its growth. The city was named after the Creek Nation's chief, Osage Chief George Rogers Clark, who had helped lead a military expedition against Spanish forces in 1806. Tulsa's early years were difficult as it competed with neighboring cities for resources and space. In 1912, Tulsa State Normal School opened its doors to students in what is now known as the Patterson Education Building. The school would soon become one of the largest secondary schools in Oklahoma and serve students from all over the state. In 1932, government debt caused by World War II led to a banking crisis that led to layoffs and mass poverty in Tulsa. However, through tough times and hard work, Tulsa persevered and became one of Oklahoma's leading economic engines during this time. In 1984, Tulsans voted to approve Measure 7 which granted voting rights to African-Americans for the first time in history within their own city limits. This decision marked an important step forward for civil rights in Tulsa; prior to this period black Tulsans only enjoyed limited access to local elected officials and nonprofit organizations. The late 1990s saw major changes occur within Tulsa as well as throughout Oklahoma due to advances in technology and new opportunities available online and off-campus. In 2000, First Lady Toni Morrison visited Tulsa on behalf of United Way International USA (UWI) during her visits Across America Tour; this event signaled a new era for support services offered by UWI in town halls across America. In 2002–2003 OKCupid conducted a study called " OK Cupid: How Street Preference Could Impact Your Relationship" which found that people are more likely than not to prefer friends who share similar interests rather than those with whom they have significant differences or different backgrounds
