The site that now Tulsa was first settled by Native Americans on May 17th, 1836. On November 15th, 1907, Tulsa became an independent city under the name "Oklahoma City." The name "Tulsa" was chosen to honor Judge Thomas Ewing who had been instrumental in creating and supporting the city's growth. After years of deliberation and debate over which name to choose for the new city center – "Oklahoma City" or "Tulsa," Mayor James Kaul decided on "Tulsa." This choice conforms with Tulsans' preference for their downtown area to be known as District One rather than just "Oklahoma City." At its peak during World War II (1939-1945), Tulsa employed over 100 different civilian staff members working in all facets of government including law enforcement; defense; public works; education; social services; and health care. Today however only about 10% of employee jobs are located downtown while most employees work within districts 1 through 5 outside the downtown core. The first permanent white settler in what would become Tulsa was Captain John Stroudwater who arrived on horseback from Texas on October 12th 1837 while exploring Indian Territory looking for a route to California

Tulsa, Oklahoma is a city in the Tulsa metropolitan area and the county seat of Tulsa County. The population was 407,821 at the 2010 census, making it the fastest-growing major city in Oklahoma. It is also one of the most Hispanicized cities in America. The first recorded mention of Tulsa is on August 24, 1819 when Major John Evans led his party into what is now east Tulsa to trade goods with the Creek nation. The city was founded by white settlers who arrived from Missouri in 1867. They named their new town after General Andrew Jackson Polk and chose to call it "Tulsa" because Spanish moss grew plentifully there near Tulasa Lake. When Jackson Polk became president in 1877, he ordered that all Indian names be abandoned and replaced with caucasian ones so as not to offend Native Americans living among them. In 1907, Tulsa's first courthouse opened its doors. In 1912, Tulsans voted to annex more than half of Owasso County (including present day Jenks) to become the state capital; this annexation created a boom for eastern towns that would become known as "the counties around Tulsa." The governor vetoed this proposal but was overruled by the legislature and it passed both houses without vetoes on October 9th 1912 becoming effective November 1st 1912 under then Governor George Catlett Smiths rule. On January 6th 1919 just before World War I began, Colonel James Fenton printed up 50 000 copies of an advertisement calling for soldiers deserters from various countries who were needed along the US-Mexico border to fight against Kaiser Wilhelm II's forces during World War I. On February 17th 1919 approximately 3000 men gathered at Western Union office plaza south of downtown Tulsa for training purposes only days before they were called up into service against Germany as part of American Expeditionary Force #1 which landed at Anacapa Island California on March 10th 1919
