Tahlequah is a town in Warren County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Tahlequah is named after Chief Tahaquah and his people who were the first to live in that location. The name means "the place where the water flows." The town was platted in 1907 by J.B. Duncan and A.F. Watkins as a cattle ranch town east of present-day Tahlequah on what was then part of the Cherokee Nation land east of Tahlequah Creek. On July 15, 1907, Duncan post office opened with four mail sacks held up by six men as witnesses; it functioned until 1908 when it closed because of lack of customers and an overpopulation problem on the Rancho de la Union Indian Reservation west of Tahlequah Creek that resulted from allotment to white ranchers following World War I. In 1909, Hernando Sánchez bought all or a portion of Rancho de la Union which became known as Sanchez Heights annexation territory for $1 per acre (a price later raised to $5 per acre). In 1914 he donated 2 acres (0 km²) to the new town which became its core while still including portions annexed from Sanchez Heights during 1919–1920 through condemnation proceedings brought by developers in connection with their development project called Kerr-McGee Field near present day Tulsa Avenue and Delaware Street NW in downtown Tulsa that spanned .
