This change not only increased enrollment for local schools but also made it possible for students living within 2 miles (3 km) of each other to attend one school without having to go through separate registration processes or travel away from home. At first this program only applied to white students; however, by 1949 black students were able to enroll as well when Central Junior/Senior High became integrated into the district system. In 1957, they merged with East Side Junior/Senior High and thus become Oneida Senior HS – still Oneida HS today! In 1965, Mohawk Valley Steel Works opened up shop in nearby Owasso and began employing many locals who had formerly worked at the mill including some descendants of those who founded Tahlequah back in 1881! For many years Mohawk Valley ran two mills concurrent - one producing steel wire while another manufactured truck parts – both located just outside town limits near what is now Interstate 44 exit 159A!
