Tahlequah is a small town located in Oklahoma. The population was 1,898 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee County government. The name Tahlequah comes from the Choctaw word "taloka" meaning "place where there are no trees." The first settler in this area was John White, who moved to this area in 1892. In 1907, Mr. and Mrs. A. Denny erected a log cabin on what is now the corner of First and Main Streets. This original cabin still stands today and is used as a museum by the townspeople. In 1907, Tahlequah became a city when it was organized under state law by an act of Congress; however, its charter never came into effect because it lackedMayor/Council power to make ordinances or levy taxes alone (the Oklahoma Constitution granted such authority to cities). On March 15, 1912 Mayor Hosea Hawkins vetoed an ordinance passed by City Council that would have annexed neighboring towns of Tulsa and Jenks to form a new city with Tahlequah at its headwaters-this action set off years of wrangling between the two cities over jurisdictional issues which continue even to this day! In 1923, after many years of fruitless negotiations, both City Councils passed resolutions condemning each other for their lack of cooperation; these resolutions were nullified by Mayor Harry Laughlin upon his inauguration as mayor three months later! On July 3rd, 1951 Tahlequah became one hundred fifty-fiveth municipality in Oklahoma when it merged with Jenks Municipality effective September 1st; but on December 5th that year voters rejected annexation proposal #2 submitted by Mayor JB Simonds due to concerns about water availability within the newly formed municipality! annexation proposal #3 submitted by Mayor John Sheahan failed ratification on January 17th 1972 following community opposition over plans for heavy industry within easy access distance of existing residential neighborhoods! In 1975 voter approval was obtained for incorporation as a village through special election held pursuant to section 6(c) of the Oklahoma Constitution; however incorporation did not take place until 1984 due largely to zoning regulations which restricts development near streams and waterways! On October 14th 1990 voters approved passage of an ordinance authorizing establishment of an armory within municipal boundaries – making Tahlequah finally one thousand nine hundred ninety-sixth municipality in Oklahoma! *City status has been revoked 4 times: once for failing To timely file revenue reports, once for failureTo renew lease agreement w/city hall days before expiration & again due to violation Of By Laws Regarding Municipal Elections* Today Tahlequah continues serve primarily as a tourist attraction with limited commercial activity

On December 3, 1907, the first post office in Tahlequah was established. The town began to grow rapidly as people moved into the area. In 1912, a school was built and named Tahlequah High School. On October 7, 1928, the town became a city and was renamed Tahlequah City.
