Tahlequah is a small town located in the Choctaw Nation reservation in western Oklahoma. The population was 4,453 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskogee County government. The name Tahlequah comes from the Creek word "tal-ke-wah", meaning "a place covered with cedar trees." The first settler in what is now Tahlequah was James Hance who arrived in 1855. He named his land Tallassee Indian Agency, after his home state of Tennessee. In 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early invading Oklahoma reached the area and burned down Hance's cabin near present day Tahlequah. Later that year, US Cavalry Colonel John Chivington destroyed another cabin on the same creek where Hance had built his own two years earlier. This event marked the beginning of what would become known as Oklahoma Territory; today's Muskogee County was part of this new territory. In 1868, Confederate Captain Julius Cushing explored and mapped much of what is now Muskogee County while stationed at Fort Sill in Tulsa, Oklahoma Territory; he named it Creek Nation because many of its people were Creek Indians living on their traditional lands east of Arkansas River (now eastern Oklahoma). When Tulsa was reestablished as an independent city in 1907 under a new constitution, it included parts of Muskogee County within its boundaries; these areas became known as Tallassee Park and West Side Park respectively. When Tulsa City limits were extended to include all or parts of Choctaw Nation properties northward to Watonga River (now south side of I-40), including much of what is now Tahlequah, Cherokee Chief Keyate Seamans offered to sell him all or any part thereof for $10 per acre ($291 per square mile). He received title to 2 million acres (8 km2) plus 600 miles (1,000 km2) across three forks or distributaries: East Fork Red Forktowee Creek which flows into Arkansas River about 8 miles (12 km) east of present day Tahlequah; West Fork Cahokia River which flows into Arkansas about 20 miles (32 km) west of present day Tahlequah ; and South Fork Owsley River which flows into Owsley River about 10 miles (16 km) northwest from present day Tahlequah . As a result, much land lay unproductive until well into the 21st century when several irrigation projects began beneficial growing practices such as corn production and hay raising that have greatly increased local populations while preserving natural resources essential for both human health and environmental well-being

Over time, more permanent structures were erected: a schoolhouse (1868), a courthouse (1871), a post office (1875), and eventually a hospital (1911). These early settlers enjoyed excellent access to clean water supplies and grew corn, beans, cattle, sheep, hogs, cottonseed oil and other crops – all while living close to nature’s wonders! Today’s downtown area contains several interesting museums – including the Tulsa County Museum of Art (founded 1913), which displays art from throughout Tulsa County; OKLAHOMA STATE HISTORIC GALLERY OF ART (opened 1997); OKLAHOMA CITY HISTORICAL SOCIETY BLOCK DOWNTOWN SQUARE (established 1905); THE TAHLEQUAH MUSEUM OF AMERICAN INDIAN ART & CRAFTS (established 1886); AND THE NATIONAL CHURCH OF CHRIST IN TAHLEQUAH/OKLAHOMA BASED ON SPANISH OLD TESTAMENT TIMES(operating since 1889)).
