In 1959, the town had a population of sixty-six people. By 1984, Tahlequah had a population of two thousand people.In 2002, Tahlequah passed an ordinance recognizing gay relationships.
Tahlequah is a small town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area. The Tahlequah post office was established in 1907 and discontinued in 1974; it was re-established in 1984. The first known settlers were refugees froman Indian battle on the lower Arkansas River near present day Tulsa. They arrived during 1851 and started a trading post called Fort Gibson which they abandoned due to Indians raiding their cattle herds until they finally moved to this location in 1859, renamed Tahlequah after Thomas Jefferson Tahle who had been killed by Plains Indians while pursuing them southwardwest of Wichita Falls, Texas. The first school was built here in 1865 by members of the Methodist Episcopal Church with help from local farmers and men from Denton County. The school became Cherokee Nation High School (now Eastern Oklahoma State University) when it opened on November 12, 1888 as part of a larger agreement between the Cherokee Nation and US government that provided education for Native American children living off reservation land east of the Missouri River.. In 1902 an addition two stories were added to the high school building adding classrooms and an auditorium which served as both a gymnasium and community center until 1985 when it closed down due to budget cuts by then Mayor Don Owen.. In 1924 Tahlequah also gained city status under then Governor James Ladd.. During World War II there was significant military activity taking place here including air raids against Japanese targets just outside town limits on April 6th 1945 that destroyed much property including some homes within town limits killing more than 60 people with resultant physical damage estimated at $10 million dollars.. After World War II there have been few major changes to its character save for some very recent additions such as its current name & incorporation into the Tulsa metropolitan area
