Tahlequah is an unincorporated community in southeastern Oklahoma, United States. The Tahlequah post office was established in 1907, and served until it closed in 1959. The population of Tahlequah at the 2010 census was 1,868. In 1907, a post office had been established by order of the U.S. Congress to serve the people of Cherokee Nation east of the Arkansas River. That post office was renamed Tahlequah due to its location on the banks of the Arapaho and Canadian Rivers near present-day Tulsa; that name remained in use until 1959. The town site was surveyed in 1882 by Wm Fenton for Sibley and Company under contract from President James Kossuth's Indian Territory government as part of a strategy to secure land for white settlers within Indian Territory limits then extending into what is now eastern Oklahoma (the Choctaw Nation also participated). When General George Armstrong Custer's wagon train encountered a Sioux war party northeast of town on July 6, 1876, resulting in his fatal battle at Little Bighorn, most members of Custer's command were killed or taken prisoner including two officers: Captain John Tilton and First Lieutenant William Quantrill. As a result, much interest developed among American settlers around this area for acquiring land southwestward along both the Canadian and Arapaho Rivers as well as along present-day Interstate 44 corridor alluvium deposited during the Great Plains Land Rush era from 1854-1896 when massive gold discoveries were made throughout what is now Wyoming & Kansas panhandle westward to Nebraska & Kansas City In 1908 local man Olin Kittrell donated $5,000 towards erection of a public building which would become one element that characterized strong community spirit early on with residents contribute meeting rooms/hallways for school board meetings held there each month beginning June 1909 thru May 1910 together with library adding another room some years later followed by fire department back then 1916 through 1918 which became… main hall still standing today inside current day courthouse grounds

In 1907, Tahlequah became a city when it annexed the towns of Ashtabula and White Sands from Haskell County. Tahlequah was one of many small towns along the now-defunct Lincoln Highway during its early years. When it supplanted Ashtabula as the county seat in 1907, most residents chose to move there rather than continue travelling to Hutchinson or Muskogee for their county government services. However, some residents did remain in Tahlequah until it ceased operations in 1960; however, most people moved out by that time because of changes brought about by Interstate 40 and other development nearby. Today's downtown district is still largely composed of old buildings built before World War II; however, recent construction has created new downtown districts including Oneida Place and Midtown which are home to several high-end businesses and nightlife options as well as more traditional courthouse/judicial functions such as hearings and trials (especially since the building that once housed the Tulsa County Courthouse has been demolished). The population growth over time has led to increased demand for space in downtown Tahlequah; accordingly, redevelopment projects have occurred throughout downtown including an addition of approximately 100 housing units due for completion later this year which will increase densities within walking distance of all business districts except Midtown where single family residences continue to dominate (a trend seen throughout much East Tulsa).
Tahlequah was first settled by the Wichita people in 1827. In 1881, it was organized as a town and named for General Andrew Jackson. The town developed around an agricultural society and saw rapid growth during the early 20th century. In 1938, Tahlequah became a city and has Since then seen continued growth with development of new government institutions and businesses.
