Tahlequah is a small town in Noble County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. The Tahlequah post office was established in 1907 and closed in 1991. The community was named after Confederate general and politician John T. Tahlequah. The first white settler to arrive in Tahlequah was Enoch White on February 5, 1885. He had come from Illinois with his family. In 1886 he married Anna Jordon and they had two children: John White (1887-1981) and Anna White (1888-1988). It wasn't until 1888 that white settlers started arriving in the area which included what is now Tahlequah Township; it was then called Cherokee Nation land west of Tulsa City Limits on the Arkansas River extending to present day Yukon Territory on the Canadian border near Red Lake Creek. At that time there were only about 50 people living hereabouts including 10 whites and 30 Native Americans primarily Chiefs or leaders of their clans who managed all aspects of life including hunting, fishing, gathering resources and trading goods with other tribes (& later Mexico) for food & shelter during times of drought or war etc...In 1889 when US Cavalry unit #1 crossed into Indian Territory they found many headless bodies just west of town today's US Highway 66 off limits to travelers as part of an Apache scalp raid campaign against American Indians across much Apache territory during184990 Campaigns by Army Lt Col George Armstrong Custer known as “the Great Sioux War” resulted in over 1,500 dead plus untold numbers wounded or captured among Apaches

On October 16, 1907, the first white person to live in Tahlequah was John A. White. White arrived with his family from Arkansas and set up a farm on the east side of town. In 1916, he married Margaret J. Denny, who had been born in Tahlequah in1885. The couple moved to the west side of town in 1917 and began raising children there. In 1922, they took over an old mill lot on the south side of town and built a home that still stands today. They also founded the first black school in Oklahoma City and helped start two churches there. In 1951, they sold their house and moved to Tulsa where they continued to live until their death in 1984.
