Tahlequah, Oklahoma is a town located in eastern Oklahoma County, on the Arkansas River. The population was 7,664 at the 2010 census. It had been part of Choctaw Nation until 1907. The first European to visit Tahlequah was Captain James Cook in 1795. He named it after his Native American guide and interpreter Tahkonwalee (Nakota). Captain Cook's party stopped at the confluence of the Arkansas and Canadian Rivers before continuing their journey southward. After landing on what is now the Oklahoma side of the river, they continued their journey downriver to Cahokia (Hokenden) on October 29, 1795. Captain Cook's logbook has not been found but his journals mention "a great village near this place" which he called "Tatchequah". The area that is now Tahlequah was first inhabited by variations of the Osage people for thousands of years prior to European contact. In 1847, a group from Wichita Territory established a post at Tahlequah in an effort to protect themselves from being taken over by Indian traders along what is now Interstate 40. There were few permanent settlements in this area until after World War II when Americans began arriving seeking oil and mineral rights in northeast Oklahoma. In 1907, as part of Choctaw Nation's surrender to Ulysses S. Grant following their successful resistance against General Custer's forces during the Little Bighorn Campaign, all tribal land east of US-80 east of US- 91 was surrendered including most of present day OKC County excepting parts of Tulsa and McAlester Counties which became parts of Indian Territory under President Abraham Lincoln as well as portions currently belonging to Chickasha Tribe within Cherokee Nation The Townsite Plan Commission developed plans for a new town site around milepost 249 on Highway 80 between Weldon Springs Dam on the north bank and Locust Creek on the south bank opposite where current day I-40 crosses both banks forming its junction with US- 87 just west of town limits A referendum authorized incorporation into Olathe effective November 3, 1907 with voting results showing that 82% approved incorporation while only 4% opposed it !!! This vote illustrates how much oklahoma statehood activists wantedTAHLEQUAH TO LIVE AND ACTIVE IN OUR STATE THE WAY CHOCTAW NATION DID BEFORE THEY HAD THEIR VOTE WITHDRAWN ON OCTOBER 3RD OF THAT YEAR
