The Tahlequah area has been inhabited by Native Americans for several hundred years and today there are several thousand Native American citizens living in the town. The first European settlers in the area were French traders who arrived in 1796. They named the area after François Tallemant (1741-1813), a French explorer who had explored parts of what is now Oklahoma Territory. In 1827, Indian trader Manuel de la Sala discovered oil wells near Tahlequah while exploring for a new route to California. Soon afterward, other Westerners began arriving in the area and starting families. By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Tahlequahtownships including some who had come from as far away as Texas! During the early days of white settlement in Oklahoma Territory, most people lived around what is now Tahlequah because that was where goods coming from Texas were unloaded on their boats before being transported along the Arkansas River to marketeers like Houston Perry and Maud Montgomery. After statehood was granted to OKlahomans on November 16th 1907, leaders decided that Tahlequah should be part of the new community so residents could get together for religious services and trade goods with one another! In 1907-1908, construction started on what would become known as Old Main High School which opened its doors to students on September 15th 1908. At that time there were just 10 students enrolled at Old Main but within a few years enrollment reached 350! Today's school has grown into an extremely popular entity with over 1,,500 students attending its various programs annually! One of history's most significant moments took place whenOld Main became one of only 4 high schools west of Missouri which graduated all 50 states' top Class A graduates during law school graduation ceremonies held at Lawton Community College on May 2nd 1959!

The Tahlequah area was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1885, John Wesley Powell led an expedition through Oklahoma and named what is now Tahlequah after his native village on the Tennessee River in present-day West Virginia. The town boosters quickly built up their business as settlers began coming to this remote corner of Oklahoma Territory looking for land to homestead or ranch. In 1907, Territorial Governor James Pendergrass approved the creation of Muskogee County from portions of Tulsa and Osage counties. This created a new base for government operations in central Oklahoma that would remain strong until 1907 when Tulsa seceded from Oklahoma Territory. As a result of this event, many residents relocated to Tahlequah due to its proximity to state government services and easy access to transportation via railroads and stagecoaches. By 1920, there were over 1,000 people living in town alone while more than 5 miles (8 kilometers) away there were only a few farmers engaged in subsistence farming activities using hogs, cattle, corn cobs and other agricultural products as their main form of income
Tahlequah, Oklahoma is the capital of Sequoyah County and the largest city in that county. The population was 14,903 at the 2010 census. It is also home to the Tahlequah Air Force Base.
