The first white person to settle in what is now Tahlequah was James A. Hogg in 1871. He built a small log cabin on the present site of Tahlequah High School. In 1907, pioneer Worthy Ewing donated land to become an incorporated city and named it after himself, Taha-lokahe (meaning "place where I dwell"). Tahlequah was founded by settlers Nathan Hodge and his family on November 3, 1907 as a dry creek town located between Haskell and Jenks counties. On December 1st 1906, voters approved incorporation into Tulsa County with a population of 10 residents; however when voting ended the next day there were only 7 residents left in town because many homes had been destroyed by severe winter weather that month In 1908 the first school was opened in town under instruction from Mrs. Jensine Wright; later that year four more schools were opened: one for whites (grades one through six), one for coloreds (grades seven through twelve), and one for Indian children grades three through nine which operated separate from other schools until 1923 when integrated into the same school system . This early history can be seen today at Central High School which reopened its doors September 12th 2009 after being closed since 2005 due to budget cuts; also on December 1st 1908 there was an addition to town’s downtown complex when Harry Nohl purchased 100 acres west of Main Street lot #6 for $5 000 taking over store property previously used by Pears soap company who moved their plant east across Broadway near Yukon Road). This new structure included a two story brick building with fireplaces and chia pet food stores on each floor overlooking Main Street; it served as both public library until May 9th 1938 when it burned down; reconstruction began immediately including new library shelving and an additional two stories with larger classrooms upstairs which still serve as the current library building today Also during this time period other businesses such as Lumberyard & Smithy bought lots adjoining downtown for further expansion purposes including ranches/golf courses etc.; eventually all these properties would become part of Town Square development plan becoming what we know today as Downtown Tahlequah . In 1911 Mayor Simeon Saylor proposed creating a water tower to augment irrigation needs within township limits but no action occurred due to lack of funds however he did fund another proposal entitled “A Water Tower For Lahome” which failed again due primarily because transportation costs were prohibitively high ($1 800) . By 1915 gasoline pumps could be found throughout town thanks largely to Oklahomans aiding local entrepreneurs who constructed filling stations along side roadsides selling gasoline or oil products directly to motorists ; thereafter most towns adopted similar business practices although some may have continued selling goods out back while others just sold permits allowing farmers access to available water sources resulting in several towns getting diverted away from Cahokia River source allthewhile knowing full well about their own decline . Finally following World War II market demand led developers like Fulton Homes Incorporated purchasing large tracts south central Tulsa beginning construction on what would become known as Southtown Tahle QUAH – complete with numerous parks、strip malls、restaurants And office buildings totaling over 200 million dollars having been funded primarily through federal grant money making it one of America’s largest redevelopment projects ever completed .. Today’s downtown community offers excellent shopping opportunities including many locally owned boutiques along Main Street while also featuring several popular restaurants such as Mockingbird Café\/Pizza place\/Bakery\/Fish House\/and much more ..
