Tahlequah is a town in Sequoyah County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. Tahlequah is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Tahlequah" comes from the Creek word "tal-kuh-lee-yah" meaning an open space or clearing above the water where Sac and Fox Nation chief Tecumseh conducted his famous speeches in 1812. In 1881, General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry brigade stopped at this spot while journeying down the Arkansas River enroute to Little Rock. In 1907, Tahlequah was selected as one of four towns in Sequoyah County to be built on a new railroad line that would travel through Territorial Oklahoma. The town was platted in 1912 and named for Chief Tahlequah (1837–1910) of the Creek Nation who had been instrumental in helping to create Sequoyah County. The first stores were opened in 1914 when rail transportation became available from Texas and other parts of the United States. By 1922, major industry had become agriculture with processing plants for cotton production becoming operational. A post office was established at Tahlequah in 1923 and remained operational until 1957; it was then automated by use of a computer system. As more people moved into Tahlequah during World War II, defense industries became increasingly important here; small businesses experienced growth thanks to wartime contracts and expansions into new markets overseas. In 1945, local school board members decided not to build any more schools due to low enrollment but instead focus on maintaining public services such as health care and education which continue today under various names including Community Health Services Inc., First Step Health SolutionsInc., and Yahweh's Blessing School District No 1). After World War II ended, Federal government agencies began arriving here seeking personnel for various projects throughout Oklahoma; many companies found staff need here since there were no high schools or other professional training facilities nearby for them to seek out employment: Lockheed Martin built its first facility here (now known as Wright-Patterson Air Force Base), Dresser Industries Opened their second plant (now known as Tinker Air Force Base), GEICO hired 1,500 employees from Lubbock after opening their own technical center there – all within 25 miles of Tahlequahn! All these large employers helped stimulate economic growth over time by creating jobs outside of town while also increasing social contacts within it amongst its citizens who shared similar needs/goals/interests across different sectors - something that cannot be said about most towns today! Indeed what has happened since then is largely due to two things: technological advancements which have made goods & services easier & cheaper to produce globally &Oklahoma’s status as an agricultural powerhouse!"

The city has experienced several cycles of growth and decline since its early days. In 1910, when it became Oklahoma's capital, Tahlequah had a population of 914 people; by 1930, however, it had declined to 728 people. Growth resumed following World War II until 1967 when it reached 1,890 people; again growth stalled after that point until 2000 when it stabilized at around 1,500 people
Tahlequah was founded in 1867 by members of the Cherokee Nation. The town became a springboard for development for the region, and developed into an important center for trade and transportation. It grew rapidly, and by 1912 had become a city. In 1932, Tahlequah was renamed Oklahoma City after statehood.
