In 1907, Tahlequah became a city when it incorporated as a result of state legislation granting cities status within Oklahoma Territory. At its peak in 1930, the city had a population of over 20,000 people and was one of four towns in Muskogee County with full municipal rights. However, due to economic recession and other factors (such as decreased travel demand), Tahlequah's population began to decline rapidly from around 2007 until 2009; by 2013 it had fallen below 10,000 residents for the first time since incorporation. Today, Tahlequah remains an agricultural community with a small downtown which contains many local businesses including two grocery stores and two restaurants as well as various local visitor attractions such as art galleries and museums. There are also several farmers' markets located throughout town each week during Farmers' Market Season; these markets offer variety items such as fruits & vegetables or crafts/homemade goods from locals among others).

In 1936, a dam was completed upstream from the town and powers were transferred to the new municipal government. In 1951, when Oklahoma became an independent state, Tahlequah reverted to its original name of unincorporated communities within county boundaries. The population of Tahlequah peaked at over 10,000 people during the late 1950s but has since been declining as many residents have relocated to larger towns or cities throughout the state. Today there are only a few remaining residents living in Tahlequah proper and most activities take place outside its walls. The Town Hall Building still stands today as one of only two buildings located inside of town limits – other notable buildings include First Baptist Church (built 1915), Post Office (1909-1959), Masonic Lodge #2 (built 1911), grain elevator (#1 built 1924), Community School (opened 1908) and Cemetery (founded 1912). Many important events that took place within this small community have been preserved through artifacts found within its walls such as candy cups used for drawing water from wells or programs designed specifically forresident children on handouts given out at special events such as Fourth Of July celebrations or Valentine's Day
Tahlequah, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by the Creek Nation. The town was named for Chief Tahlequah and his family. The town became a railroad junction in 1911, and later served as the county seat. In 1933, the OKC Courthouse was built in Tahlequah and is still used today.
