It was founded in 1868 by white settlers and named for General George Armstrong Custer, who died in a battle with Sitting Bull on July 24, 1876. Tahlequah became an independent city in 1907 and an unincorporated community in 1930. It has since become an agricultural center with a population of about 2,000. Tahlequah was platted on August 14, 1868 by John Witherspoon and James Polk from land donated by Captain John Fenton. The name means "place where buffalo rest." A post office was established at Tahlequah on October 9, 1869 under the name "Newton". The first store opened in 1870 and papermaking began soon after that. In 1880, Tahlequah had a population of 153 people; it grew to 322 by 1890 when cotton production resumed following the American Civil War. By 1910 it had reached 611 people and agriculture continued to be its mainstay until World War II when technology changed so much that many farms were replaced by containerized crops such as peas and beans which made transportation easier and allowed for mass production prices to decline below cost levels In 1907, citizens of nearby Muskogee City voted to become their own city separate from Tahaquelhosutl (now Muskogee). They did this because they wanted more control over their own affairs without having to answer to Tahaquelhosutl officials or village leaders who shared some but not all of the same goals or interests as themselves. This decision set off years-long struggle between Muskogee City government and Tahaquelhousutl as both municipalities tried to gain greater autonomy while still paying taxes to Muskogee County coffers
Tahlequah was founded in 1867 by Major General George Armstrong Custer and his troops during the American Civil War. The town was named after Chief Tahlequah, a general in the Indian Wars. In 1907, the town became a city and remained so until it lost its charter in 1969.
