Tahlequah is a small town in Oklahoma, located about 25 miles west of the state's capital, Oklahoma City. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. Tahlequah is an agricultural community and its economy relies mainly on agriculture and ranching. The town contains a historical marker commemorating the Battle of Tahlequah which took place in 1892. The name Tahlequah comes from the Creek word "tahi" meaning "place where people used to camp." At first it was thought that this was derived from the fact that there were many tahi near by during early days of Indian settlement in what is now Oklahoma. Today, however, no evidence supports this derivation of the name. creek means watercourse and quahl (a term meaning "big man") suggests someone who possessed great strength or power. In later years a post office was established here with the name "Tahlequah", but it continued to be known as "Plymouth". It wasn't until 1907 when a new post office called "Tally" was opened and eventually became known as Tahlequah proper. According to oral history, in 1892 white settlers came across an Apache Chief named Kiowa living among theatai Indians near Plymouth and desired his scalp for trade goods they had acquired from him previous year while exploring western Indian Territory. A battle ensued resulting in one white man dead and three Apache men taken prisoner before Finally yielding to superior numbers killed all three captives including their chief.[1] In early 1893 several hundred self-proclaimed whites met at Plymouth to decide whether or not they should move into what would become present-day Tahlequah after hearing about Mexican land grants east of I-40 being offered for sale at $10 per acre ($160 per mile). After much debate it decided against moving until more information could be gathered; however some residents did move anyway and set up homes around what is now Main Street on October 15th 1893,[2][3][4] although most residents still live within today's limits of Plymouth.] On November 3rd 1893 two cannons were mounted on wagons pulled by horseback along US 66 between Prescott and Tulsa whence they started fires that ignited sagebrush(known then as prick brush) which caused significant damage[5][6][7]. Oral history has it that blacksmiths worked day AND night repairing weapons captured during fight[8] giving rise to current moniker “Armistice Day” events celebrated every year throughout Oklahoman community since conflict ended 50 years ago! On January 17th 1896 another large force consisting mostly women & children under age 10 attacked & looted stagecoach stop outside town Limits just west of schoolhouse belonging to Gertrude Jenson & her six daughters aged 5-12yrs old (& youngest Marie). Unsuccessful attempt by Town marshal Gunnarson using single shot rifle resulted in death 4noncombatants & 2 prisoners female ages 9yrs old thru 12yrs old also captured
