Tahlequah, Oklahoma is home to the Wichita County Sheriff's Office and the Tahlequah Rifle and Pistol Club. The club has been meeting monthly since 1907 to keep firearms in usable condition. In 1924, four residents of Tahlequah pooled their money to buy a gunsn’truck and began delivering guns and ammunition to Wichita County. The store was open until 1975 when it was closed by the sheriff's department. After the store closed, local citizens formed a group called "The Citizens Committee for Gun Rights" to continue stocking firearms and engaging in activities such as handgun safety education classes. In 1977, the committee changed its name to "Tahlequah Rifle & Pistol Club". In 1978, members of the club voted to create an museum dedicated to firearm clothing history in honor of former president Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1979, they also voted to construct a rifle range in memory of veteran Lt. Col. Hugh Wirtz (USMC). Today, both ranges are open seasonally for shooters from all over OKC area who come out for fun or business shoots with friends or family members! Many of these new arrivals started investing in rifles and shotguns as they felt that they had a right to bear arms under American law. This period of gun ownership is often referred to as "Gun Culture" in Tahlequah, as people here were deeply interested in using their weapons for self-defense or protection. Throughout all of this time, it was necessary for shooters to keep up with technological advances so that they could compete at a level playing field. That's why some of the earliest handguns on record were designed specifically for rifle shooting events - such as the Colt 1873 revolver, which was used extensively during early firearm competitions. Tahlequah is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, seat of Haskell County. The population was 71,419 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest municipality in Haskell County after Muskogee. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The region around Tahlequah was settled by Choctaws and other Native Americans in what is now eastern Oklahoma during the 18th century. A fortuitous location on a fork in the Canadian River made this area an ideal place to trade with Mexico and its Wilkinson brothers founded Tahlequah as a trading post in 1787. The name "Tahliquah" comes from several words meaning "the place where we found corn." In 1840, Captain John Ross discovered oil near Tahlequah and named it for his friend Alexander Graham Bell (1778–1857), who had first heard about oil from Spanish traders on his travels through Texas and New Mexico. In 1907, General George Custer's cavalry unit explored what became Tulsa before their fight with Indians at Wounded Knee that year; soldiers returning to headquarters noted there were many buffalo carcasses among the trees in central Tulsa which they placed near Tahliquah Creek to suggest this was not an Indian village but rather an event that had occurred outside their military control
