Tahlequah, Oklahoma is a small town located inawn of the Oklahoma Panhandle. It was founded by white men in 1907 as a cattle ranch and post office. In 1930, the United States Post Office moved to Tahlequah from Muskogee, Oklahoma. The town was named for General George A. Custer and his battle group that fought at Little Big Horn in 1876. Ammunition sales began in Tahlequah in 1903 and continued until 1957 when regulation of ammunition prices made it an illegal business. The post office closed its doors on November 30, 1957 after more than fifty years of service. Today, the only remaining building from the original post office is used as a schoolhouse. The history of ammunition begins with early development of artillery shells by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. By 1861, powder had become available enough to create cannons that could hit targets over long distances with great accuracy; however, this required refinement of projectiles so they would not detonate prematurely or cause injury to friendly troops close by. In 1945, due to its location on the border of two states, Tahlequah became a site of conflict over mineral rights; local residents boycotted federal land seizures that took place around that time. After years of negotiation, tribal governments reached an agreement in 1957 under which all mineral rights would be owned collectively by the Tlingit and Na-Dene nations. In 1963, after several years of planning and construction, Interstate 35E was completed linking Tulsa to Oklahoma City via Tahlequah; this made it easier for people living near Tahlequah to commute to larger metropolitan areas. Today, Tahlequah remains one of the most vibrant communities in Muskogee County; its economy leans heavily on retail trade and services such as health care and education.

The town rose to prominence after it became the seat of government for a district composed of parts of Oklahoma Territory.
