Stillwater was founded in 1907 as a small community on the banks of the Arkansas River. The town quickly grew and by 1912 had a library, two post offices, three churches, and 300 residents. Stillwater developed into an important commercial center for the region and became known for its prosperous cotton crops. In the 1930s, Stillwater experienced rapid growth as a result of oil exploration and production in nearby Comanche County. By 1940, the population had reached 5,000 and still remained largely rural. However, during World War II, Stillwater played an essential role in the defense of Oklahoma City by providing munitions storage and labor camps for manufacturing munitions. In 1948, Stillwater was incorporated as a city with a population of 10,000. It declined thereafter until it reached its current size in 2000.
