Stillwater is one of two towns in Muskogee County that are both on the Arkansas River, and they are also both home to what has been called "the perfect place to raise a family." The other is Jenks. Stillwater's namesake stillwaters come from its location on the Arkansas River, which flows through it and forms its border with Jenks. This river remains an important water route for industry and transportation in Stillwater and Jenks alike, even today. Despite this importance, however, fishing remains one of Stillwater's main attractions thanks to its many streams and rivers that provide plenty of opportunity for target shooting as well as largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, and Kokomo Ratingsucker (a type of sunfish). The community was founded by settlers in 1881 when John Wiese bought land from Chisholm Creek Indians near present-day Jenks. Wiese named his new settlement Stillwater after his business partner William Fentonstill who had helped him purchase the land from the Chisholm Creeks three years earlier. By 1888, Stillwater had a post office; by 1912 it had a grocery store; by 1916 it had a small hospital; and by 1921 it had six schools - all public schools - plus five churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1889), Methodist Episcopal Church (1893), Baptist Churches United (1914), International Christian Embassy Church (1922), and Norwegian Lutheran Church (1925). In 1923 Stillwater became yet another town within Muskogee County when it joined with neighboring Jenks to form what would become known as Tulsa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The growth of oil production throughout later decades led to increased demand for local housing starting in the early 1970s which caused developers to start building smaller subdivisions closer to businesses rather thanlarger single-family homes like those that were common before then outside of Tulsa proper or larger areas such as Tulsa City Limits northwest of downtown Tulsa which were annexed into city limits after 1978 The current incarnation of Stillwater began developing significant suburbs eastward around I-40 Exit 144 about 1984 where residents could commute into large urban areas without havingto leave their neighborhoods

As one of only two cities in Oklahoma granted city status by referendum since 1907, it helped make Stillwater an important center for government and business activity around the state during this time period as well as providing access to public transportation which renaissanceOklahoma during this time period thanks largely to a new system called “The Trolley” which ran between Stillwater and Jenks until 1966 when it merged into the Tulsa System Railway Company Trails program run jointly by Tulsa City Councilman Don Sennott and then-City Manager Clyde Ritchie which remains today as Oneida Trail
