Stillwater is located on the north bank of the Arkansas River, about 30 miles (48 km) east of Tulsa and 25 miles (40 km) south of McAlester. The town was founded in 1881 by settlers from Illinois. The name "Stillwater" was given to the river by General John Custer as a way of distinguishing it from other rivers in that area. A post office was established in 1883 and remained open until 1907. In 1898, a school building and some stores were constructed near what is now US-61/Best Road. The first store opened at 307 Main Street on October 9th, 1898. The name change to Stillwater Consolidated School District took effect on November 10th, 1907 when all schools within the new district became consolidated into one single building complex with named after streets within the boundaries of the district: First Avenue North; Second Avenue South; Third Avenue West; Fourth Avenue East; Fifth Avenue North; Sixth Avenue South; Seventh Street West; Eighth Street East; Ninth Boulevard North (now I-10). In 1951, Stillwater annexed an area adjacent to its own west side which included much older Muskogee County towns such as Jenks and Shawnee Falls before completely annexing those towns in 1966 when they became part of Tulsa County as well – making Stillwater fully coextensive with Tulsa proper for educational purposes only! Today stillwatersites abound throughout Tulsa proper but scattered throughout Muskogee County so there's always something worth seeing or doing close at hand if you're feeling wanderlusty!
