The town was founded in 1881 by James Stillwater and his wife Jane. It was named after still water near its original location. In 1907, the Stillwaters donated land to build the Stillwater Baptist Church which remains one of the most important buildings in town today. The town currently has a population of just over 2,000 people and consists of just a few blocks of Main Street with no commercial businesses or services located within walking distance of any other type of establishment. The only entertainment options available are horseback riding and fly fishing from riverboats that dock on the Arkansas River outside town limits (approximately an hour's drive). This is a small community that relies heavily on tourism for economic stability and there has not been much recent development to bring more than basic needs such as housing or shopping within close proximity for residents since 1990 when Interstate 44 bypassed the town completely leaving it without access to either transportation or job opportunities outside of neighboring Tulsa. Stillwater's history can be traced back to 1881 when James Stillwater and Jane moved from their home in Ottawa County, Illinois to purchase 640 acres (240 hectares) west of present-day Tulsa along what would become I-44. They named their new settlement "Stillwater" after still water near its original location on Coweta Creek – where they had first seen it while hunting buffalo three years earlier while traveling through Canada with their father. After some time selling additional parcels nearby, they purchased 1,040 acres (500 hectares) extending into Owasso County from 1886 until their death in 1913; this included all present-day Owasso Township including parts now withinstillwater township Ida Blythe Wise conducted an archaeological study funded by her husband General Electric Company president John Ayerst at her ranch west of Stillwater in 1916 which revealed numerous bluff top sites associated with Prehistoric Native American habitation dating back 10 thousand years old including several large shelters thought to have been used as tombs for chiefs and their families during late prehistoric times period - further evidence supports current claims about early Indian traders living among them In 1932 construction began on what would become main street instillwater - originally called Main Street Avenue because it ran east–west instead of north–south like most US towns then – this became known throughouttown as "The Boulevard" due principally to its long distance connections via truckload service between various local farms and marketplaces throughout central Oklahoma City

In Stillwater, Oklahoma, the first post office was established on May 3, 1881. The town developed around the railroad station and the now defunct Dixie Railroad. In 1907, Stillwater became a city.
