The first people to live in Stillwater were those who settled along the Arkansas River in what is now Osage County in 1868. The town was named for Stillwater Creek which ran through it. In 1907, the city of Tulsa was founded nearby and soon after annexed much of Haskell County including Stillwater. A post office called Stillwater was established in 1911, and remained in operation until it closed on March 15, 1957. In 1932, a dam was constructed across Stillwater Creek to provide water for the city of Tulsa. The dam created many problems for the people of Stillwater as it caused extensive flooding that destroyed homes and businesses; also, it diverted water from still more important waterways including the Arkansas River which caused great ecological devastation downstream as well as contributing to climate change by blocking sunlight from reaching crops upstream. It wasn't until 1984 when plans were put into place to rebuildstillwaters creek Dam and improve drainage so that future floods wouldn't occur
