Stillwater is a city in, and the county seat of, Haskell County, Oklahoma. The population was 54,563 at the 2010 census. Stillwater is located in the eastern part of Haskell County on the Republican River. It was founded by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in 1881 as a small Mormon town. The LDS Church's first president to visit Stillwater was Orson Pratt. On July 6, 1881, Pratt preached his first sermon from the old Palestine Native American Agency building on Main Street. The church purchased the agency for $5 per acre (equivalent to $130 in present day dollars). The LDS Church built a temple there in 1889 and named it "The Temple" in honor of President George Washington Carver who had visited Stillwater earlier that year with his wife Lucy Mack Smith. In 1914, still using its original name "The Temple," the temple became home to then-President Woodrow Wilson's inauguration ceremonies after he was elected U.S. president that year. In 1927, when still other churches were established in Tulsa and Jenks by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), most residents decided against moving to those new cities because they felt their religious affiliation would be lost if their churches moved away from their homes near their families and friends within their own hometowns." For many residents however,moving away from home seemed like an impossible task given how quickly things had changed since they had last been around; technology had progressed so rapidly." Nevertheless some chose to move while others watched as their community slowly withered away." By 1980 only a few hundred people remained in Stillwater while more than 1,000 people lived within easy driving distance both eastward along I-40 and westward along State Road 620" However this gradual fading did not stop locals from celebrating every special event or holiday related to their faith such as Pioneer Day which falls on Easter Sunday each year and Holy Days observed throughout the year including Christmas Eve/Christmas morning etcetera". In spite of all these events happening outside Of Utah or even Oklahoma City due largely to Interstate 40 being just then under construction", local citizens continue to enjoy all aspects associated with Latter Day Saint culture without having any break whatsoever during what has become known locally as "the slowest growth industry ever".
