When the Oklahoma Territory was created in 1907, the land east of the Arkansas River was annexed by the new territory. The towns of Stillwater and Jenks were founded on this new land and quickly became known for their firearms-related businesses. In 1915, a local arms dealer named Edward J. Smith opened a store in Stillwater that would become one of the most significant gun stores in eastern Oklahoma. Over time, other gun dealers joined Smith at his store, with an emphasis on FIREARM ACCESSORIES and GUN BAGS. Finally, in 1971, Smith's store closed its doors after more than 50 years in business. Today, there are still several gun stores located in Stillwater that focus on firearm sales and accessory shopping. Some of these stores continue to carry older guns such as revolvers and shotguns while also stocking rifles (and eventually handguns) for sale to customers who desire them. Additionally, many local schools have collection centers where students can bring firearms into school to be tested or played with before being turned over to the police department for storage or donation purposes.
