Shawnee is a small town in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. Shawnee is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. It is one of the poorest towns in the country. The Shawnee people are descendants of early Creek Indian traders and explorers who settled in what is now Oklahoma in 1824. They were called by their original name - Chignonka - meaning "the place where everything grows." The first white settlers arrived around 1830 and named the village after General Custer's famous army pursuit of Apache chiefs at Yellincka Hill near modern Anadarko. A school and post office were built there in 1835, but it failed to gain any attention from settlers because it was located on an isolated stretch of prairie which offered no practical agricultural opportunities. In 1839, an act was passed by Congress recognizing Shawnee as a city and giving its citizens some basic civil rights including voting and education. However, due to its remote location, Shawnee remained little more than a frontier hamlet until well into the 19th century. In 1851, Edwin Cummings organized a group of settlers along with Jesse Hinton to explore new land northwest ofpresent-day Tulsa that would eventually become Oklahoma City. He named his new settlement ShawnEE after his home state of New York (now Erie), which he thought would attract more pioneers to hissquidry than anything else nearby on the then-new American continent. The town quickly grew into a bustling center for trade with Native Americans living near by as well as later immigrants from Europe and Asia who discovered vast tracts of undeveloped land east of present-day Tulsa during this period known as "The Great Osage Boom."
