In 1892, a group of men led by J.W. Beavers purchased some land around the corner from Wm Hayshoe & Co., which became known as "Beaver Dam." Beaver Dam served as the initial courthouse and jail in Shawnee while it was being built. In 1907, when the town was founded, it consisted of just two buildings: one used as a schoolhouse and another as an office building for Mayor James Eagan (1870-1937). The first post office opened in 1908. In 1925, Mayor John Aiken (1872-1951) proposed redesigning Shawnee's downtown into a modern city center with streets wide enough for four cars to cross at each intersection; this would have removed most or all commerce from downtown and made it easier for residents to get around without going through its business district . However, this proposal did not gain traction with residents or officials because it would have affected their daily lives too much; instead they opted for traditional Indian village architecture on Main Street which remain today

Shawnee is a town in Shawnee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,852 at the2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area. The name Shawnee comes from the Ojibwe word "Hiawatha" meaning "the great chief." The first white settlers in this area were the Pawnees, who moved into this region in 1827. In 1828, James Fenton and his party built the first house in what is now Shawnee. A post office called Shawnee was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1904, Waddell Dixon homesteaded land near present-day Shawnee and began to farm it. Dixon's son Willard founded the Dixon Tire and Rubber Company on October 1, 1927 on land that he had bought from John Hanks of Wichita Falls, Texas two years earlier. The company became one of only a few tire companies nationally to survive during the Great Depression with its slogan " Better tires for better roads." The townspeople voted to make their own school district on November 3rd of that year; however, it wasn't until 1925 when a new high school building was constructed for Shawnee High School which still stands today as one of town's most iconic landmarks. That same year also saw the opening of World War II military base expansion southeast of town by General Douglas MacArthur which served as an important training ground for American soldiers fighting overseas during World War II and continues to be used by local military units today including 4th Infantry Division Headquarters Camp Eagle Scout outside of town! A new fire station was opened west off US-580 just north of downtown on November 5th 1942 thanks to donations from Mrs. Mabel Lakin (now Dickey) who operated her home across Broadway from where apparatus store #2 stood until 1984 when it was torn down due to code violations! In 1949 Gertrude Swenson donated land east off US-580 south of current day Keystone Drive for a community center which served as both primary education & recreational facility until its demolition in 2001?!? The Shawnee people were a Native American tribe located in present-day Oklahoma. They are thought to have been descendants of the Wichita and the Cheyenne. The Shawnee were active in trade and raiding settlements on the Great Lakes region for many years before they arrived in what is now Oklahoma. They are first noted as inhabiting this state in 1817, when they killed two white men travelling through the area on their way to Fort Gibson. In 1830, they founded a town called Wilcoxville within present-day Tulsa. Aftera period of conflict with other tribes, the Shawnee merged into the Cherokee Nation in 1837.
