Shawnee is a small town in Oklahoma. It was founded in 1907 by the merger of two other towns, Shawnee and Union. The name Shawnee comes from the Ojibwe word "sha-wi" which means to trade goods. The first settlers were farmers who grew corn, wheat, and beans. By 1912, the population had grown to over 100 people. The townspeople built their first school in 1913. In 1945, the United States changed its currency to the dollar and gave away free items worth $1 per person in order to encourage economic growth. This event is known as the " USD$1 giveaway." That same year, Shawnee became an official city. In 1951, the United States Air Force began providing air support for local military forces during OperationWideawake II; this operation lasted for three months and resulted in around 30 civilian deaths. As a result of this conflict, Shawnee became one ofthe first communities inOklahomato installarmed police officers to protect its citizens from potential violence or crime. In 1958, Shawnee hosted World Expo 86; this event was significant because it helped grow international trade within Oklahoma and within Shawnee itself. To commemorate this occasion, a new civic center was built on North Main Street; this building still stands today and offers numerous recreational activities such as theater productions and art shows available to visitors each season! In 1966-1967 (the so-called "Brownsville War"), areas north of downtown were targeted by Mexican Drug Traffickers seeking revenge for U S Border Patrol's arrest of their boss's son just weeks earlier at that time however no shots were fired but rather various objects were thrown into homes warning residents about impending violence occurred later that night when drug dealers arrived at random homes looking for opponents they believed might be involved with law enforcement efforts
