Shawnee, Oklahoma is a small city in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of Muskogee County. Shawnee is an agricultural community located on the north bank of the Muskogee River and it has a history dating back to 1836 when a group of Shawnee Indians founded what would become Shawnee Mission. Today, Shawnee's economy depends heavily upon agriculture and ranching. The town began as a small Indian village called Shawanochee which was established by Chief Kawika in 1836 on land acquired from the French during their occupation of Northwest Territory. In 1837, Shawanochee moved to its present site, across the river from modern-day Shawnee, after Fort Ottawa was destroyed by a United States military strike in that year. The new village quickly became known as "Shawnee" after nearby Canadian Creek ran through it and all its citizens were united by this common border connection. In 1838, Shanaochee built Fort Snelling to protect their new village from Ulysses S Grant's Invasion of Northwest Territory led by General Andrew Jackson. After several years of construction, Shanaochee was abandoned due to lack of food and drinking water; however, local Native Americans still used it for military purposes until 1889 when it was converted into an artillery battery park administered by the Army Corps of Engineers for training purposes only. The first white settlers arrived in1839; they were Methodist missionaries who named their settlement "Logan". By 1840 there were about 50 settlers living in Logan while other villages aroundMuskogee had also been founded over that same period including Tecumseh (1841), Loblolly(1843), Arbuckle(1845), Iola (1847) and Toole(1849). However, all these settlements soon came to an end due to difficulties with transportation and cheap passage on the Kansas-Nebraska Corridor road which then connected Kansas City with Topeka via Lincoln. By 1850 only 3 villages remained: Logan (now Shawnee), Arbuckle and Toole - all now within Muskogee County limits'. In 1851 Major George Aiken organized what would be called Muskogee County government within territorial boundaries; he chose ShawnEE as its county seat because it offered more space than any other location within Muskogee County at that time. This choice caused some friction between Aiken's followers who wanted autonomy within county government while others supported centralized government under Aiken himself - ultimately leading to his ousting in 1860 following allegations of corruption linked with county finances/administration One important event during this time period occurred when members from various southern tribes gathered together at Okmulgee Agency near present day Tulsa for negotiations towards peaceful coexistence – known today asthe Cherokee Nation Chiefs' Conference . At this meeting many agreement were made including guarantees for tribal lands east of Arkansas if those lands ever become states again; thus beginning talks towards full reunification among American Indian Nations . Unfortunately these peace talks never led anywhere as hostilities continued until 1898 when America finally ceded control overOKlahomato Mexico

Shawnee is an incorporated city in Noble County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. The Shawnee mission was established in 1820 by Father José de Jesús Chorro and Brothers José and Francisco Xavier. It served as the first permanent European settlement in what is now Noble County. In 1867, during the American Civil War, Shawnee was burned by Union forces as a result of its neutrality. The city was founded on November 3, 1907 by J.D. Payne from Tulsa, Oklahoma with a population of 10 residents. On July 4th, 1909 Shawnee's first public meeting took place to approve incorporation into theNoble County government under the name "Shawnee". On October 6th of that year the first municipal election took place and Mayor Denton Hogg (the father of future United States Senator Don Hogg) won re-election with 66% of the vote against only 14% for challenger Prentice Akins (a resident of Muskogee). In 1913 Mayor Hogg died suddenly after being hit by a car while walking his dog; office fell to Deputy Mayor Clements until he resigned due to health concerns on January 1st 1914 after which it passed through succession through Deputy mayors Willard Witherspoon (1915-1920), Leroy Mabry (1920-1921), Alonzo Beasley (1921-1924), Lewis Moran (January 1st 1924 - April 17th 1925) then John Schiefferice who held office until February 2nd 1929 when he resigned due to ill health because he could not effectively run with all members present present at any given time during meetings instead electing officers by roll call voting which lasted for two hours each day during business sessions where no adjournment or special session could be called without unanimous consent therefore continuing debates rather than ending them abruptly like normal proceedings did; finally on March 3rd 1929 Mr.Schiefferice resigned effective immediately effective February 2nd following death from pneumonia caused by overwork brought about from years long attendance at meetings without proper rest days between sessions thereby ending any chance of further193officership changes On May 16th 1930 Jens Lønager became mayor becoming only Indian American to serve in this role within Oklahoma City metropolitan area when townspeople elected him unanimously over incumbent Harry Weislein who had been running unopposed since May 15th 1930; Lønager would continue serving as mayor until his death on December 21st 1983 at age 84 years old In 1933 Charles Forrest became mayor succeeding Lønager after serving one term and eventually retiring on July 20th 1938 having advanced age On November 11th 1941 James Epps became mayor becoming one of just three Indians ever elected asmayor in Norman Oklahoma making him also one of very few Native Americans ever chosen to lead a major U .S . city outside reservations throughout history Epps would remain as mayor until his resignation effective September 25th 1959 due to illness
In 1868, Shawnee was the capital of the Indian Territory. The town grew up around what is now the business district of Shawnee. In 1890, the territorial government moved to Oklahoma City and Shawnee lost its status as a capital.
