Shawnee is a town in the US state of Oklahoma. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Shawnee is located in Muskogee County. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Shawnee was established in 1867 as a post office and has since grown into an agricultural center with over 20 businesses and several thousand residents. The Shawnee Indian Nation occupies most of the town's eastern edge and portions of its western side. The town was named for General Tecumseh Sherman, who fought in the American Civil War on their side and later became one of America's most famous generals. On July 4, 1867, General Sherman arrived at Shawnee to open up land to settlers and found that many had married Creek women from nearby Fort Gibson. He disapproved of this practice, which he called "the notch in God's hand." In order to show his disapproval, he placed a stop to all transportation between Fort Gibson and Shawnee until better transportation could be developed. The first village founded near today's downtown Shawnee was called "Toba City". This village consisted of about 25 people who built homes along the Arkansas River on land donated by Major John Tilton. They were joined by other villages throughout Muskogee County during the early 1800s as more settlers came downriver looking for rich farmland following large earthquakes that struck central Oklahoma in 1868-69. In 1870, when construction began on what would become Woodward Avenue (now State Road 69), it quickly became apparent that there would be no stopping anyone from coming to Shawnee – everyone wanted to experience what it must have been like back then when Native Americans were still living here among us! The courthouse building burned down in 1886 but new construction soon followed including a school, Presbyterian church (founded 1865), post office (1867), garage (1892), hotel/motel (1902), grocery store/warehouse (1905) and several other businesses until 1910 when Tinker Street was added to make way for a modern high school that still stands today!

Shawnee was founded in 1836 by the Shawnee people. The town was named for the Shawnee word "hawn" which means "place of plenty." The Shawnee people were a Native American tribe that lived in present-day Oklahoma. In 1868, the Shawnee nation was dissolved and their lands were divided among various tribes. Most of what is now Oklahoma was part of the Kansas Territory when it was organized in 1863. When Kansas became a US state in 1907, most of its Indian Territory remained within Oklahoma. The first settler in Shawnee was James Bonham, who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on what is now known as Morning Star Road. In 1840, he married Sarah Ann White and they started to cultivate land around their cabin. By 1845, they had purchased some additional land and built another log cabin on this site. They continued to farm until about 1870 when they sold all their land to John Ewing for $1,000 cash. In 1865, John Ewing donated two acres of land near his home to the Methodist Episcopal Church so that it could build a church building. The new church wasn't completed until 1886 after many donations from individuals and businesses throughout Northwestern Oklahoma! In 1887, Wichita State Normal School opened up at nearby Haskell University as the first post-secondary school west of Kansas City! In 1914, Prohibition beganing across America and many farmers turned to smuggling liquor into Mexico instead of buying it legally from merchants east of the Mississippi River! This led to great amounts of lawlessness on both sides of the border as smugglers quickly realized how profitable it would be to traffic alcohol without getting caught! In 1939, when World War II beganwwar raged across Europeand North America; however much like today there were no real news reports coming out about what was happening back home! On September 2nd,, 1945 wwar ended with Japan's surrender following nine years worthof warfare!!! As wwar came to an end many people returned home including many farmers who had been living behind enemy lines! With war ending came more opportunities for farming which Lead To Great Prosperity For The People Of Shawnee!!
