In 1865, the firstée rifle match took place at the old Haskell County courthouse Grounds; rifles were fired off from three baskets placed on stakes near the door of the courtroom (now known as "Basket Hill"). At that point guns were not allowed into municipal elections or other public events. Today, this event marks one of the earliest forms ofgun shooting sanctioned by an organized society - a precursor to modern competitions like IPSC and IDPA! On Saturday nights beginning in 1892 Old West shows occurred at various places around town - balls were kicked off buildings onto rooftops for practice purposes (and sometimes resulted in broken windows) while gunfire went on inside!
