From its inception, Shawnee’s citizens were ardent advocates for the right to bear arms. Gun violence and crime rates in this community were strikingly low throughout much of the 20th century. However, after a series of tragedies at military installations across the country during World War II (including an act of mass shooting at Fort Riley), NRA lobbyists successfully pressured local legislators into adopting sweeping gun control measures that remain in place to this day. One such law was the Gun Control Act of 1968 which made it a felony for any person who “knowingly sells, delivers, or causes to be sold any assault weapon or ammunition knowing that it will be used in connection with a crime”. This draconian measure helped contribute to the high homicide and non-fatal shooting rates in Shawnee throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The Gun Control Act has been repealed multiple times since then but its legacy is still felt today – particularly as shootings continue on a nightly basis here in Oklahoma City. In 2013, Mayor Blankenship also proclaimed April 15th as National Firearms Prevention Day – an opportunity for all Oklahomans to learn more about safe handgun storage and use practices and take personal responsibility for their safety!
