This led to increased enrollment at local Native American schools and renewed growth at Shawnee; by 1900 it had reached its current size of around 2,000 people.

The Shawnee were one of the most powerful nations of their time and were able to resist British encroachment for many years. In 1792, the Shawnee were forced out of their traditional territory by General James Wilkinson's Jackson Expedition.
