Shawnee, Oklahoma is a city in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 5,994 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskogee County. Shawnee is part of the Tulsa–Muskogee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shawnee was founded in 1881 by settlers from Illinois and Iowa. It became a town in 1907 and a city in 1950. The Shawnee football team (now known as the Chiefs) played its first game on November 6, 1907 against Choctaw Nation College in Choctaw City, Oklahoma. In 1923, the city fathers built what is now called "The Shrine" which served as an outdoor amphitheater for community events and public dances until it was destroyed by fire in 1978. In 1984, Shawnee voters passed a ballot proposition to become an independent city governed by its own council with more power over budget and personnel decisions than those granted to the Muskogee County Municipal Authority which includes both the sheriff and police department On December 3rd of that year City Manager Don Heineman announced that Shawnee would be moving to Tulsa due to economic reasons brought on by competition from neighboring cities such as Tulsa and Jenks who had recently amalgamated into Tulsa-Muskogee Metropolitan Statistical Area
